Renée Levine Packer's book This Life of Sounds: Evenings for New Music inBuffalo received an ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for excellence. The book presents an authentic portrait of a notable American artist thatis compelling reading for the general reader as well as scholars interested in twentieth-century American music, American studies, gay rights, and civil rights. In addition to analyses of Eastman's music, the essays in Gay Guerrilla provide background on his remarkable life history and the era's social landscape. These episodes are examples of Eastman's persistence in pushing the limits of the acceptable in the highly charged arenas of sexual and civil rights. Eastman's provocative titles, including Gay Guerrilla, Evil Nigger, Crazy Nigger, and others, assault us with his obsessions.Įastman tested limits with his political aggressiveness, as reflected in legendary scandals like his June 1975 performance of John Cage's Song Books, which featured homoerotic interjections, and the uproar over his titles at Northwestern University. His music, insistent and straightforward, resists labels and seethes with a tension that resonates with musicians, scholars, and audiences today. “She’s an important part of our work to conserve these magnificent animals,” the facility wrote.A compelling portrait of composer-performer Julius Eastman's enigmatic and intriguing life and music.Ĭomposer-performer Julius Eastman (1940-90) was an enigma, both comfortable and uncomfortable in the many worlds he inhabited: black, white, gay, straight, classical music, disco, academia, and downtown New York. Sully’s yet-to be named infant is the 34th gorilla born at the zoo, says the release. The facility “was the first zoo in the world to welcome the birth of a baby gorilla” in 1956, according to the release. The surprise discovery builds on a history of gorilla conservation at the Columbus Zoo. Their population has been depleted due to habitat loss, deforestation and hunting for bushmeat. There are an estimated 100,000 left in the wild across central Africa, says the Columbus Zoo. Western lowland gorillas – the subspecies that lives at the Columbus Zoo – are critically endangered, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The new mother and baby will be on display for guests at the zoo’s gorilla habitat starting Friday, according to the release. “The veterinary and animal care teams have not yet approached the infant, giving them time to bond with one another and with the rest of the troop, but will conduct a wellness exam soon,” the facility said in the release.Ī DNA test will be performed later to determine the newborn’s father. The zoo says the adorable infant appears to be a healthy female. Western lowland gorilla born at Fort Worth Zoo The Fort Worth Zoo has announced the birth of a western lowland gorilla. With the gestation period for gorillas being eight and a half months, the zoo estimates Sully became pregnant in the fall. The pregnancy was also missed because “gorillas rarely show outward signs” they are carrying because “newborns are smaller than human babies and gorillas naturally have large abdomens,” the release notes. When Sully arrived in Columbus, she was a “young and healthy animal” and didn’t require any medical procedures that would have led to the discovery sooner, the zoo said. Well, gorillas “don’t have prominent sex organs” and males and females look mostly alike until around age 8, the zoo said in the release, noting it’s only later in life that males develop their large size, silver backs and distinctive head bumps.Īlong with the hard-to-distinguish features, veterinarians at the zoo where the gorilla was born took a “hands-off approach” with their care and allowed the primate to be cared for by its mother, the Columbus Zoo noted. The course was fantastic and highly, highly recommended (though the junior course was not challenging for our 8 year old). A TV showing how to lock and unlock the safety harness could have been shown while we were waiting to don gear. A video and demonstration and not just reading the instructions could have helped. They spent most of their energy working the safely locking mechanism.īetter instructors and better instruction could have made the course much more fun. The adults on the main course felt the same. I felt that was all I got accomplished and it wasn't pleasurable. When you are assisting a small child on the junior course, you must lock, unlock and relock the kid then lock, unlock and relock yourself. When we started the course, I had to ask for help several times, I was so flustered with the equipment that I couldn't enjoy the obstacle course. "Does anyone have any questions"? We were all in a daze. Again it seemed that the instructions were given as fast as the kid could talk. Once we were geared up, we received further instructions on safety and the locking, unlocking and relocking of the safety garb. They had given this spiel a thousand times and they rattled everything off with no real intent or expectation that the folks would understand. We were helped by teens guides whose instructions in donning the gear and navigating the equipment were very poor. What was disappointing was the very poor instructions. The rest of the family completed the regular course which was fantastic. There is a height restriction so I went with a grandchild on the junior course. If you want to skip the loop and just head down the falls, check out Fall Creek Falls via Base of Falls Trail. We visited FCFs to participate in the Canopy Challenge May 2021. On the way back, take the Woodland Trail to make a lollipop loop out of this hike. 2 miles making the way back up the most difficult part of this hike. Swim in the pool at the base or just chill on the large rocks surrounding the falls. The trail turns right along the exposed rock of the gorge before coming to the base of the falls. The trail is very rocky but there are plenty of handrails the entire way down. Continue on past the overlook to hike down to the base of the falls. Once you join back with the Woodland Trail, it's just a short distance to the Fall Creek Falls Overlook for an impressive view of the 256ft park namesake waterfall. Take the Gorge Overlook route for three marked side trails to views of Cane Creek Falls and excellent views of the surrounding gorge. The second intersection is where the Gorge Overlook Trail begins a short loop with the Woodland Trail. All trails are well marked so you should have no trouble navigating. Shortly afterward, the trail crosses two intersections. During busy times, the bridge becomes a bottleneck so get there early. Cross the suspension bridge over the cascades to start the hike. Several overlooks and short paths lead down to Cane Creek Cascades. The hike begins to the left of the Betty Dunn Nature Center, but before you begin, explore around a bit. Fall Creek Falls is one of the most popular state parks in Tennessee and for good reason. And if you go on weekends, it'll have crowds too, so there's that. Fall Creek Falls via Gorge Overlook Trail Robin wrestles with whether or not he's responsible for the consequences of being forced into actions he doesn't want to take. Even going back and watching them now as a 19 year old, there are themes and messages that strike chords with me and make me think. While there is lots of fighting, the storylines are also complex and thought provoking. Second of all: I watched this show when I was in first grade, and I've rematched it several times. These characters have no affiliation with Marvel whatsoever. Really? Teen Titans is based off of the classic DC New Teen Titans comics. Even if it was just the first few seasons due to the issues 4kids has with licensing and the lack of several cable channels, I'm glad I grew up with this show and I'm glad to be able to see the rest of it as an adult.įirst of all: "TEEN TITANS combines Japanese manga-style graphics with old-school Marvel Comics superheroes." But apart from moral messages and age appropriateness, it's a great show with fun and diverse characters, and stories that can be funny, emotional, and intriguing. It's a cartoon, and kids that have moved beyond PBS will be ready for it, though there are some intense parts and they are fighting criminals for a major part of the show. It frustrates me to say the least, but at least I can agree with the age rating. This page deserves a redo, because the character and moral-related content is all there, but you'd have to actually watch a few episodes to see them. And for as much time as there is spent fighting, there's just as much time spent on the camaraderie of the eponymous Titans. There's going through puberty, withstanding bigotry, the meaning of liberty, getting along with your friends, getting along with new people, working together, opening yourself up, dealing with grief and moving on, facing your fears, and many more messages that are hidden, and sometimes blatantly apparent, within the show. For this show, all they say is "It's all about the fight scenes" and "Isn't there more to life than fighting?" Why yes, uninformed commenter, there IS more to life than fighting. Viewers will note that this site gives the spin-off, Teen Titans Go, a fair shot by describing the characters and how they reflect on kids. I was incredibly disappointed that the person who constructed the guide gave Teen Titans zero stars for positive messages. Reading the list of criteria for by which the media is judged on this site for Teen Titans is the reason I actually made an account on this site. I agree that this show is not for younger kids but it is one of the best kids shows I’ve seen that tackles a lot of very serious and important topics with a host of fantastic role models! Shoutout to Bumblebee who legit is one of the strongest females “there’s not a man alive that can tell me what to do” I turned the original Teen Titans on for her so she can actually learn some valuable lessons. Like seriously where is the strong female hero? That is not behavior I want my niece to think is acceptable!). Honestly when my niece started watching Teen Titans Go! We got two episodes in before I immediately turned off that moral garbage (legit we watched an episode where Starfire turned herself into a villain because she thought it would make Robin happy after Spade was defeated, and he thanked her for it and did nothing to get her to be herself just went along with it. I could probably go down the episode list and tell you the life lesson taught in each. They talk about animal cruelty, the importance of friendship, anger issues, accepting and overcoming your fears, the dangers of being over competitive, not taking practical jokes too far, the list goes on. Respecting others choices “I respect that you don’t eat meat, please respect that I don’t eat fake meat”~Raven. being exuberant with your emotions, Starfire, and keeping a tight lid on emotions, Raven). The episode about understanding others and respecting how they handle their emotions (I.e. There is the episode all about inner beauty and accepting people for who they are. Like the episode where they address racism, or the one where they address disabilities when Cyborg tells a kid with a prosthetic arm that having the prosthetic doesn’t matter, what’s important is what’s attached to the prosthetic (the boy himself). I don’t know what CommonSense is talking about saying this show is only about the fight scenes, sure there are a lot of them, it is a show about super heros after all, but Teen Titans tackles a lot of important topics! I would say this show is all about morality and life lessons with a side of fight scenes to keep you entertained. Visit Online Ordering for more information. In particular, the resource consumption, isolation level, and transaction path length should be evaluated for each query. Pay attention to database performance during the design and construction phase of the database and application. This potential should be closely examined before selecting an application development tool for SQL Server, especially for performance sensitive OLTP environments. If the development tool doesn't allow explicit control over connection management, query cancellation, query timeout, result fetching, and so on, blocking problems may not be resolvable. No matter what level of visibility the application exposes regarding the database calls being made, a blocking problem nonetheless frequently requires both the inspection of the exact SQL statements submitted by the application and the application's exact behavior regarding query cancellation, connection management, fetching all result rows, and so on. However, attention paid only to the database may not lead to a resolution, and can absorb time and energy better directed at examining the client application and the queries it submits. There may be a tendency to focus on server-side tuning and platform issues when facing a blocking problem. In contrast, the second situation results in a consistent state that can be easier to diagnose. These situations are difficult to troubleshoot using SQL Server Management Studio to narrow down the issue to individual queries. In the first scenario, the situation can be very fluid as different SPIDs cause blocking on different resources over time, creating a moving target. This type of blocking doesn't resolve itself and prevents access to the affected resources indefinitely. This type of blocking resolves itself over time but can cause performance degradation.Īn SPID holds locks on a set of resources and never releases them. When locking and blocking persists to the point where there's a detrimental effect on system performance, it's due to one of the following reasons:Īn SPID holds locks on a set of resources for an extended period of time before releasing them.
Some of the research I found from finland and GB had pointed to a design like that being used in gallery loads of the early 1900's. Let me know the results, that makes sense. I would order another, but FEDX has a 50 Alaskan barrel headed this way that I know I can get the right recipe and suppress it to around 125-130 with coolant. I'm wishing I had ordered a few extra inches on this barrel. At the current temperatures, I would expect the barrel to cool down to ambient temp within 15 min. Then spend most of the day measuring cold bore shots. Consequently, I'm going to start over with new brass and a vise rest. My biggest gripe is vertical stringing and the first round sometimes dumping. Which is fine, I don't plan on using it past 200 anyway. I'm shooting an encore pistol, so I don't think I should expect much better than 1 MOA. After the pierced primer, I stoped testing and played with my GAPs.Įver tried Unique or Redot? MAybe a blend of TB and a faster powder? Not because of the peircing, but I've used it on my 16" 1/10 with 10.5 gr and the case volume is too low to get any consistency unless you tip the rifle barrel up to get the powder against the primer (then it will actually will shoot 20 rounds into a dime at 100 and 2" at 200, but I'm not likely to do this when in the field when I usually raise my barrel to the target from the shoulder). I'll pull the rest of this load, and will probably not use greendot again. The 240's with 15.0 greendot pierced the primer on the second shot with no vel reading. The 220 Hornady RN SP's shot fairly well with 14.0 gr TB getting me 975 fps, grouping was about 2" at 100. I only had a few rounds remaining of 200's so I'll need to order some more to get a better picture. The 200 SMKs and 13.0 TB were right at 1040fps and grouped around 1.75". It could also be my crony and where I'm placing the bullet through the screens-not totally sure. I think it's blowing a lot of powder into the suppressor and igniting there. I tried 14, 14.5 and 15.0 and the velocity actually went down as I went up in charge. With the 240s and TB, I maxed out in vel at 13.0 grains. The first cold bore shot is slower, today I shot about 50 different rounds with mixes of TB, Greendot, and Unique with 240 and 200 SMKs and 220 RNSP. (a guess Do you have a longer barrel? And are you seeing a significant speed difference between the first shot (cold barrel) versus a second and third shot? My calculation for the 240gr SMK was hypothetical based on a ratio of what is good for a 175 versus a 220gr SMK. The Editor over at 6MMBR website mentioned he used the dry lube to reduce his SD, so I am going to try it. Since I use an Ultrasonic cleaner to clean brass, there is no burnt powder residue left inside the case. I just ordered some Neoconos Special Carbon Steel Dry Neck Lube to try and bring down the SD by lubing the inside of the neck. Reasonably accurate but not as good as 175 SMK.Ģ20gr SMK 13.0 gr of Trailboss, 1020 fps but with a high SD, pretty good accuracy. Very accurate.ġ80gr Sierra RoundNose, 10.8 gr of Trailboss, ~1050 fps and SD 30. My loads: (I use LR primers and not Magnum primers)ġ75gr SMK 10.8 gr of Trailboss, 1064 fps and SD 14. However, I did not get any keyholing with 220's. Actually, according to the stability calculator, 220's are marginal with 1in10. I was just working up a load for the 220gr SMKs, and have not used the 240's because the bullet is too long for my twist rate. I have an 18" barrel, DPMS LR308B with 1in10 twist. Its grip is both thin and narrow, and even with the extended magazine it seems like there is simply not enough grip. The 911 is not a great fit for shooters with large hands, or even medium hands. The empty cases had a habit of falling back down on top of my hat after bouncing off of the roof of the shooting stall. All rounds did fire when loaded into the gun again, but that is not the kind of performance that should be exhibited in a defensive pistol.Īnother strike against the 911 is the ejection pattern. I experienced some light strikes on primers. Along with the weak slide movement is a hammer that seems to lack strength. This also leads to the slide feeling gummy or sticky when dirty. The slide feels like it does not want to move even though it is designed to move. Rather than feeling like a Swiss masterpiece where fitment is tight but movement is perfect, the 911 is just tight. The slide fit with the frame is tight, but in a bad way. That is about the only positive thing to say about shooting the 911. It is a decently heavy pistol for its size, and it is enough to tame the already mild. The recoil is soft thanks to the metal construction. 380 pistols in the age of the high capacity micro 9mm. It seems that the market moved on from tiny. 380 had waned by the time Springfield brought theirs to market. The 911 was itself a short-lived product, and was discontinued within a few years. It also did away with the grip safety while retaining the manual safety. Many years later, Springfield Armory brought out their contender, known as the 911. But it does retain the general air of “1911-ness” which many shooters were drawn to.Įventually the Mustang went out of production. There are many design differences between the Mustang and the 1911, such as the lack of a grip safety. Now, this is a bit of an oversimplification. Instead of shortening the barrel and grip lengths to make something smaller, Colt took it a step further. Even short barrel models like the Officer are simply less than ideal for that type of carry. And while it has served in military, law enforcement, competition, and self defense roles, it is not much of a pocket pistol. Along with boiling point, and melting point, this includes:Įlectric charge – this is a property that causes matter to encounter force when inside of a magnetic field.ĭensity – this describes how close or how far apart the atoms within a substance are Other Physical PropertiesĪ physical property is anything you can hear, see, touch, smell, or measure and observe in some form without changing the chemical identity of the substance. When ice melts, the only thing changing is its physical state. When ice melts into liquid water, the chemical identity doesn’t change. So, if there is an observable change, but the chemical identity doesn’t change, then you have a physical change. The chemical property hasn’t changed, only its physical property. For instance, when water (H2O) boils, so when it converts from a liquid to a gas or water to steam, it is still water. Boiling Point of a SubstanceĪ substance’s boiling point is a physical property. Let’s take a look at some examples of physical properties of matter. A physical property describes an observable change in a substance’s characteristics but does not affect the chemical makeup of that substance. Now, properties are just characteristics of something. Being able to make observable distinctions is a very good and necessary tool in life, and this absolutely applies to the sciences. What we observe helps us to make distinctions. Maybe you’ve distinguished a chocolate lab from a golden retriever, because the chocolate lab was brown, had shorter and more compact hair. Have you ever classified something based on what you observe about it? Perhaps you’ve distinguished a dog from a cat based on the dog’s larger structure, flappy ears, and longer head shape. For example, the reaction between salt and water, or the dissolution of salt in water, involves breaking the bonds between ions, but it also creates ion-dipole interactions between the water and ions.Hey everyone! Welcome to this Mometrix video on the physical and chemical properties of matter. However, some reactions can go either way and sometimes physical processes involve the breaking of chemical bonds. Since physical changes are only a transformation that changes a substance's properties without undergoing a chemical change, they are reversible. Conversely, the paper’s molecules keep the same atomic structure, but the interaction between the paper molecules is altered, or broken. The ice’s molecules maintain the same atomic structure (H2O), but more hydrogen bonds between each water molecule are formed. Some examples are freezing water and cutting paper. Physical changes are usually intermolecular changes (literally meaning “between molecules”), such as phase changes. Rusting: The chemical reaction that occurs when iron reacts with water and oxygen to form iron oxide (rust).ĭigestion: The chemical reactions that occur in the body to break down food into nutrients that can be absorbed and used by cells. Examples of chemical changes include:īurning: The chemical reaction that occurs when a substance reacts with oxygen to produce heat and light. Remember that chemical changes are usually accompanied by a chemical reaction to show this breaking and forming of bonds. They are rather expressed with brackets and charges around the brackets to show the transfer of electrons. Note that ionic bonds are not represented like covalent bonds with lines as shown in the above diagram. Here, we can see that the oxygen molecule's covalent bonds had to break, and then new ionic bonds formed between the magnesium and oxygen to form two molecules of MgO. The bonds that are broken are red, and the bonds formed are green. The synthesis reaction above shows an interaction between two magnesium atoms and an oxygen molecule. |
